Jh. aus gleichbed. frz. total übernommen, das auf mlat. totalis »gänzlich« beruht; Stammwort ist lat. totus »ganz; gänzlich«. – Zu »total« gehören folgende Bildungen: Totalisator »amtliche Wettstelle auf Pferderennplätzen« (19. Jh.), übernommen und dann latinisiert aus frz. totalisateur »Zählwerk, Registriermaschine« (> engl. totalizator »Maschine zum Registrieren der Zahl und des Betrages der abgeschlossenen Wetten bei Pferderennen«). Frz. totalisateur ist eine Bildung zum Verb frz. totaliser »alles zusammenzählen, addieren« (beachte »totalisieren« veraltet für »zusammenzählen«). – Aus »Totalisator« ist die junge Kurzbezeichnung Toto (20. Jh.; heute vorwiegend im Sinne von »Fußballtoto« verstanden) hervorgegangen, die lautliche Anlehnung an das dem gleichen Bereich (des Glücksspiels) angehörende Wort ↑ Lotto zeigt. – Ein Staat, in dem alle Bürger mit ihrem Leben und ihrem Eigentum ohne Sicherung durch Grundrechte einem diktatorischen Regime unterworfen sind, wird totalitär genannt. Das Wort, im 20. Jh. mit französierender Endung gebildet, bedeutet wörtlich etwa »alles erfassend, alles beanspruchend«. Dazu gebildet ist Totalitarismus »totalitäre Machtausübung« (20. Jh.).
